Interview with Amedeo Migali, Founder and Managing Director of MICAD
Science, Design, and AI in Modern Yatcht Engineering
Amedeo Migali, founder and CEO of MICAD, has spent his career moving between scientific strictness and creative design. In an industry where innovation has come to encompass simulation, data-driven engineering, and generative AI, his hybrid background provides a unique insight into how recreational boat design is evolving.
C. Amedeo, what about you? Do you feel your “soul” belongs more to science, creativity, or teaching?
A: When people ask me whether I feel more like a professor, a naval architect, or a scientist, I usually smile. My path goes through them all. My PhD and years spent in research have shaped my personality: curious, analytical, and methodical. This mindset still guides me today.
C: In which way do the fundamentals of science affect your work at MICAD?
A: They have taught me to approach every project with clarity and measurable reasoning. At MICAD, I try to bring this way of thinking to the team’s vision, figuring out problems before solving them, and making decisions based on data, rather than guesswork.
C. You have described yourself as a “Galilean”. How did this definition come about?
A: Yes, I like to call myself “Galilean”, because I truly believe there’s a direct connection between Galileo’s method and today’s Generative AI. Both rely on observation, experimentation, and the ability to challenge existing models. In yacht design, this spirit is more relevant than ever since AI is transforming the way we analyse and create.
C: With such a strong scientific background, do you still consider yourself mainly a yacht designer?
Yes, absolutely. Science provides structure, but design gives the direction. In the end, I’m a yacht designer with scientific roots, someone who uses research and technology to build creative and efficient solutions for clients.
C: How does this combination of science and creativity shape MICAD’s approach to innovation?
It’s the core of our work. Generative AI, simulation tools, and data-driven approach aren’t just buzzwords for us, but practical instruments that help us design smarter and push boundaries, still focusing on performance, comfort and reliability.
C: What if you had to sum yourself up in a single sentence?
A meeting point between scientific method and yacht design, a researcher at heart who loves turning ideas into real projects.
