Research and Development

“MICAD S.r.l.”, is a Partner of ABE (Abbattimento delle emissioni vibroacustiche e chimiche in ambito navale- Reduction of maritime related noise, vibration and chemical emissions) a Research and Development project in the field of maritime technologies. The latter is co-funded by the European Regional Development Fund and in the framework of Regional Operational Program (2014-2020) of the Italian Region Friuli Venezia Giulia, Objective “Investments to support Growth and Employment Objective 2014-2020”, Axis 1 – “Strengthening research, technological development and innovation”, Action 1.3 – “Support of collaborative R&D activities for the development of new sustainable technologies, products and services”.

The project ABE started on 1st November 2018 and is designed to give an answer to a set of problems related to engine vibrations of merchant and cruise vessels, with consideration to the hull-related noise impact on the marine environment. ABE considers the interconnection of noise, vibration and chemical emissions inducted and generated by engine and flue gasses plants, it plans the research of design methodologies and technologies for emissions reduction in order to provide a set of new services systems and new products.

The projects aims to deepen simulation / optimization methods for noise and vibrations reduction generated by main engines and spread on the hull, cabins and common areas though the Structure Borne Noise (vibration of the engine structure through the ship foundation) and Exhaust Gas Noise (throbbing of exhaust gases in the exit of the turbine). In relation to the chemical impact, a combined catalytic technology / scrubber (filter for reduction of emissions) will be developed with the aim of reducing simultaneously nitrogen and sulphur oxides, particulate and hydrocarbons generated without use of SCR systems (chemical systems for reduction of emissions).

“MICAD S.r.l.”, is a Partner of the UBE 2 project (Underwater Blue Efficiency 2) which, as a research and development project in the field of Maritime Technologies, is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund. The activities of the project are, in fact, part of one of the priorities of the Regional Operational Programme, Objective “Investments for growth and employment” 2014-2020 or Axis 1 – “Strengthening research, technological development and innovation”, Action 1.3 – “Support for collaborative R&D activities for the development of new sustainable technologies, new products and services”.

UBE 2, launched on 1 December 2018, aims to define a scientific method for assessing the quality of the entire ship project in relation to the vibratory phenomenon and predict the triggering of phenomena strongly non-linear to date well known of which is not clear neither the deep nature, nor the root causes that generate them. Correlations between the vibrational behaviour, measured under real operating conditions, and the variations in the fluid dynamic range of the living work will be sought, with particular interest in the propeller and all the appendices. Through fluid dynamic simulations we will try to obtain the physical descriptions missing from the measurements made in real life. Analysing a minimum of three pleasure yachts, different in size and displacement, a multivariable response surface of the vibratory phenomenon will be established, which can be exploited and extended to all planing boat projects.

The final objective of the project is to understand the physical vibratory phenomenon and obtain a design method that allows to mitigate or prevent the emergence of this phenomenon by identifying a reduced set of parameters and related thresholds of eligibility.

The target of the EASYPRO project is to develop a modular collaborative hardware/software infrastructure that can coordinate all the project activities of the vessel, allowing the timely sharing of the necessary information.
The infrastructure will allow users to:
  • easily manage and distinguish the time and logic phases of a project;
  • assign roles to team resources;
  • manage, assign and monitor activities to one or more people;
  • set up logics of dependency between activities;
  • clustering activities to make project development more efficient
  • analyse priorities between project activities and level resources;
  • diversify activities on the basis of model structures adapted to shipbuilding;
  • generate project timesheets;
  • set milestones;
  • archive project deliverables in a secure, accessible and shared way;
  • overcome e-mail as an internal and external communication tool using web 2.0 tools;
  • monitor and manage project costs;
  • diversify the user experience according to the user’s tasks;
  • to archive and share the acquired know-how in a simply reproducible format;
  • create reports.

The Cantiere 4.0 project, yearn for combine the vision of fourth industrial revolution (Industria 4.0) with the concept of digital Advanced Manufacturing Systems (AMS).
Cantiere 4.0 is about the development of the production system and related services, machinery, equipment, measuring systems, production control through ITC methods and technologies based on internet (cloud) for real time integration of all attendees in the supply chain. Several companies are involved in: MICAD, Monte Carlo Yachts, Ikon, TeknoData and Esteco.

The project goal is to develop a new kind of electric propulsion starting from an electric engine with permanent magnets replacing the rotor with a propeller.
Merging the electric engine with the propeller, we simplify kinematic chain raising up system efficiency.
For sail applications on board, this means removing the propeller shaft and the endotermic engine system, developing a new propulsion generation, generating only electric energy.
In this way the boat may be considered on zero emissions.

Sophya’s general purpose is to study the correlation between performances in rough sea and its action (sea conditions). Its aim is to improve the ship as “product” with relation to its navigation characteristics, with a clear impact on competitiveness on the market by Monte Carlo Yachts SpA and improvement of design methodologies by MICAD srl.
Several companies and istitutions are involved in: MICAD, Monte Carlo Yachts, Esteco, UniTS, UniNA, University of Zagreb and SISSA.

The project is intended to support MICAD strategy for the development of the company’s activities along two main lines:

  1. Development of innovative products / processes through:
    strengthening research activities for the development of innovative solutions and new ideas through appropriate financial instruments;
    activation of IPR management processes to protect and enhance the company’s innovation and intangible assets.
  2. Certification of business processes in total quality regime to increase competitiveness on global markets.
