Interview with Ilaria Muci, Naval Engineer at MICAD
Ilaria Muci joined MICAD in 2022, bringing with her a strong academic background in Naval Engineering and a deep personal connection with the sea. Her work combines technical precision, digital modelling and advanced design tools, with a particular focus on the development of 3D Digital Twins. In this interview, she shares how her passion for yachting became a professional path, and how digital innovation supports MICAD’s engineering process.
Q: Ilaria, your passion for yachting runs deep. How did it become a professional path?
I: I was born by the sea, and I have always felt a profound sense of calm and attraction towards the water. That natural connection gradually influenced both my academic and professional choices.
I studied Naval Engineering in La Spezia and, after gaining experience in the sector, I joined MICAD in 2022. I already knew the company and was immediately struck by its dynamic, forward-looking spirit and its strong international outlook.
MICAD is a boundary-free organization, capable of operating successfully both within Italy and on a global scale.
Q: You hold a highly technical role within the company. What are your main responsibilities?
I: My role involves close collaboration with the engineering team, providing technical support across different areas of the design process.
I work on layouts, technical drawings, system and component sizing, but the core of my activity is the development of 3D Digital Twins. This allows us to create highly detailed digital models that support the project from a technical, functional and operational point of view.
Q: Which technologies and software tools do you work with?
I: To deliver a comprehensive and state-of-the-art product, we rely on a high-end software ecosystem including NX, CATIA, Rhinoceros and AutoCAD.
This multi-software approach allows us to interface with different industrial standards, while ensuring a very high level of precision for our clients. Each tool contributes to a specific phase of the process, from modelling and technical development to the management of complex design requirements.
Q: Digital Twins are becoming increasingly important in engineering. What value do they bring to yacht design?
I: A 3D Digital Twin is not only a representation of the vessel. It is a technical tool that allows us to study, verify and manage information with greater accuracy.
It helps connect design intent, engineering requirements and production needs in a more integrated way. For a company like MICAD, this means improving precision, supporting decision-making and reducing the gap between the digital model and the final result.
Q: Teamwork is a recurring theme across MICAD’s stories. How do you experience collaboration between the Lecce and Trieste offices?
I: We are a young, close-knit team with an open mindset. Despite the physical distance between Lecce and Trieste, we share goals and maintain a continuous daily exchange.
This connection is strengthened not only through digital collaboration, but also during major international events, from trade shows in Cannes to Düsseldorf, where we travel together and represent MICAD at some of the world’s leading yachting exhibitions.
Q: How does this sense of teamwork influence the quality of the final outcome?
I: It has a direct impact. When a team is truly aligned, the results are always stronger.
In our work, technical precision depends not only on individual expertise, but also on communication, coordination and shared responsibility. This is what allows us to manage complex projects with clarity and consistency.
Q: If you had to describe your role at MICAD in one sentence?
I: I would describe it as a role that connects naval engineering, digital innovation and teamwork, transforming technical complexity into precise and reliable solutions.
